It's going to be a good year for Cape Town, South Africa.

V&A Waterfront Cape Town

Cape Town is the designated World Design Capital for 2014. This prestigious honor means that the city we love has earned itself the opportunity to become a better place through design, and we think that's pretty amazing! As the World Design Capital, Cape Town aims to use its design resources throughout this year to improve its social, cultural, and economic life.

In addition to being a transformative year, it's also likely to be a busy one: Cape Town has been elected as a top travel destination for 2014 by two major publications: The New York Times (U.S.) and The Guardian (Britain). Aside from being named 2014's World Design Capital, why is Cape Town in the spotlight as the world's number one destination location?

We think these are a few good reasons:

  1. It's the home of Table Mountain. Named after its uniquely flat summit, Table Mountain is one of Cape Town's many star attractions. Ride a cable car up to the top of the mountain where you'll enjoy an expansive bird's eye view of the city, and – if you're the adventurous type – abseil back down!

  2. You can take a ferry to the historical Robben Island, where icons like Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu were held prisoner. Now, the destination serves as a museum for tourists and a constant reminder to South Africans of the price paid for democracy.
  3. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town's working harbor and South Africa's most popular tourist attraction, chock full of shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

  4. There are 30 places to surf within an hour's drive of the city. If you enjoy swimming, surfing, or lounging on the beach, Cape Town is a great place to visit. The months of June, July, and August are ideal for exploring the city's coast.

  5. The Woodstock Exchange puts a designer's spin on the farmer's market. It's a creative exchange hosted every Saturday in Woodstock, where creative professionals come together to interact and show off their ideas and creations.
Cap Town
... And that's just a small glimpse into what Cape Town has to offer. It's brimming with other fascinating attractions, including Cape Point, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.
