An intimate, multi-sport experience for unparalleled wild beauty

Scouting destinations to find what’s hot, what’s new, and those secret hidden gems is an integral part of what we at Wild at Heart Journeys do. Owner Robin Francis travels to Africa several times per year to experience our destinations and accommodations first hand. Just as importantly, these visits create personal connections with the in-country partners and guides that provide our clients with their trip of a lifetime.

As both a travel junkie and equestrian in her own right, Robin recently set off on a 2 week scouting trip to Botswana - clocking 14 flights and 20 different accommodations - to find the very best horseback riding options available for our equestrian travelers (and their non-riding partners). The result is our new riding safari, the Botswana Desert and Delta Ride, a dream itinerary covering three magical yet very diverse parts of Botswana and offering some of the most incredible wildlife experiences in Southern Africa.

Trip Itinerary

The twelve-day Botswana Desert and Delta Ride begins in the Makgadikgadi, the world’s largest salt pan and home to flamingos, other waterbirds, and one of Africa’s largest zebra populations. Travelers will spend three days exploring the area by foot, horseback, and jeep while based at the Hemingway-esque Camp Kalahari, nestled in the acacias and Mokolwane palms.

Daytime safaris will track springbok, gemsbok, and the elusive brown hyaena, while after-dark excursions seek out aardvark, honeybadgers, other small mammals, and even possibly a black-maned Kalahari lion. And did we mention you just might wake up with a captivating meerkat snuggling up for early morning warmth? (Bucket list - check!)

On day 5, a short flight takes travelers to the Selinda Reserve, one of Botswana’s finest wildlife areas, for exploration on foot, by canoe, or in open game vehicles. Our experienced guides listen to the clues that the bush releases - following the calls of lions, leopards, and other game. At Selinda Explorer’s Camp, guests can take a cool swim in the spillway while watching the wildlife walk by and, notably, all lodging proceeds at Selinda go straight to African conservation efforts.

The final days of the trip ride out of the stunning Macatoo Camp, exploring the world famous Okavango Delta by horseback while tracking giraffe, elephant, hippopotamus, buffalo and more. Non-riders will do game drives or boat activities, depending on the flood waters.

An Intimate Group with Expert Escorts

The Botswana Desert and Delta Ride takes place in June 2017 and will be escorted by Wild at Heart Journey’s Robin Francis and legendary guide David Foot. Contact us to join the intimate group of 8 guests for an unparalleled equestrian experience of the best of Botswana. Hemingway would approve.
