Riding JourneysWhy Journey by horseback...
"We love horses for what they embody; freedom, spirit, adventure, perseverance, and drive. Horses are gentle, loyal, fierce friends, and the ultimate travel companions who are willing to go the distance with you." - Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill had it correct, what better travel companions than a horse!
For us, a safari by horseback is the ultimate way to travel. Its not just about the freedom and thrill of galloping over a vast and wild landscape. But more about the intimate way one gets to explore a destination. It's the extremely close encounters with the wildlife and landscapes. It's the interactions with people, your horse and your own introspection that so naturally occurs along the way that make these incredible journeys.
Riding expereinces in Africa can range from short rides to full day rides returning to camp or lodge, to multi-day trips riding from mobile camp to mobile camp in the bush. Those not wishing to ride can join their riding friends as well, as some options offer activites for the non-riders. You can join set departures or create your own itinerary and your own departure dates. There are a number of itineraries available for experienced riders as well as for less experienced riders. Below is a brief summary of riding experiences by country.
Horseback safaris began in Kenya back in the 1970's. The country offers the best opportunity to see large herds of wildlife on horseback and to gallop amongst the migrating herds of zebra and wildebeest.
Riding safaris in Kenya are traditional luxury mobile tented camps around areas such as the Masai Mara and lodge based rides in areas like Laikipia, Borano, Lewa, Amboseli and Chylulu Hills. Both offer great riding and game viewing and superb accommodation.
The Masai Mara is world famous for witnessing the annual Great Migration of wildebeest. This spectacle typically takes place in Kenya between July to September. Each year around 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra (along with other antelope) gather up their young and start their long trek following the rains from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania towards the Masai Mara.
The riding safaris are in Northern Tanzania, which is home to three of the 'Seven Natural Wonders of Africa': the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera; Mt Kilimanjaro, the Africa's highest peak; and the Serengeti, renowned for the Great Wildebeest Migration.
These horse safaris are traditional luxury mobile tented camps which take you off the beaten path riding through lands traditionally used by the Maasai. You will be surrounded by Tanzania's four giants Mt Longido, Mt Namanga, Mt Meru and most famous of all, Mt Kilimanjaro, an unforgettable experience. Your experienced and knowledgeable guides take you deep into the bush to witness the wonders that Tanzania has to offer: the magnificent wildlife, the scenery, and the magical interaction with the local tribes who inhabit these areas.
A horseback safari in Botswana is considered by many to be the ultimate riding safari, offering abundant and varied wildlife, experienced and knowledgeable guides and well- schooled, responsive horses; all in an exceptional setting. Guest often combine riding with non-riding options here.
Botswana is home to varied landscapes, from the desert to delta. Riding safaris are offered in several areas: The Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta, is awe-inspiring and rich with wildlife. Mashatu Reserve is also home to amazing wildlife and another great location for riding. The landscape and wildlife of the Makgadikgadi, part of the Kalahari Desert is unique and makes a fascinating experience on it's own or combined with the Delta.
Mozambique is considered the Jewel of the Indian Ocean. Horse riding in Mozambique takes you along deserted white sandy beaches and splashing into the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean, and along the cliffs with spectacular views of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
The itineraries are lodge based, flexible and tailored to your length of stay with a mixture of half day and all day rides with picnics.
It's the landscapes the draw people to Namibia. The words stark and beautiful are often used to describe Namibia but this doesn't really do justice to the amazing diversity of landscapes, colors and flora and fauna of this beautiful country. The rides in Namibia are best suited to those who wish to ride fast, want adventure, wilderness camps, unique wildlife, top quality horses and knowledgeable experienced guides.
South Africa offers an assortment of landscapes, wildlife and history and is often referred to "a world in one country". South Africa offers the most diversity of riding options than anywhere else in Africa from wildlife viewing, beach and winelands. The quality of horses, guiding and accommodation and value for money can match those anywhere in the world.
Rides here can be mobile camping or lodge based. Riding in big game areas where there are elephant, buffalo and lion is restricted to experienced riders but there are also safaris and trail rides for less experienced riders.
